This article is from step one in my highly successful 7-Step Success Mindset Formula course.
To be successful it isn’t enough to just say “I want to be successful.”
We all have our own definition of success. Success to me may be completely different than what it would be to you.
Most people don't know what they really want. In fact, you may think it doesn't matter which path you choose. You may feel that you can be successful at anything you put your mind to. Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but this is not accurate.
I hear this all the time from people who say they want to be a professional basketball player, a doctor, the President of the United States, and on and on. While I encourage anyone who wants something bad enough to suit up, get in the game and give it their best shot, I do not agree with parents who tell their children that they can be and do anything. It's just not realistic.
You can become successful at many things, but not “everything.” You may know people who seem to have a magic touch - practically everything they do is hugely successful. These people seem to:
- Effortlessly attract amazing opportunities – while you feel sorry for yourself from the sidelines.
- Have no trouble making loads of money and have wonderful relationships with their spouse, significant other, parents, kids, siblings and friends – while you agonize over how hard your life is right now.
- Have a genuine zest for life – while you feel lost, confused and frustrated much of the time.
How do they do it? What do they have that you don't?
The answer may surprise you. The secret is...
They know who they are and what they really want!
Even though I just confirmed it's possible to become successful at many things you do, it is MUCH MORE LIKELY that you'll become successful at something you truly ENJOY and strongly DESIRE.
The successful people in your life have...
- Developed a strong relationship with themselves,
- Become very clear about their passions in life, and
- Made the choice to follow them with enthusiasm and a never give up attitude.
They don't have to force themselves to work on their goals each day. Since these goals are what they are already committed to, it is at the core of who they are, and who they are becoming. This makes each new day an exciting adventure – a daily adventure that they really look forward to!
The results speak for themselves. These people AUTOMATICALLY attract what they desire. Gaining these desires makes them even more passionate to dive into their endeavors. It doesn't seem like work to them because they are having the time of their life! They are doing what they truly want to do.
Even if you were able to achieve a certain level of success at something…
Success doesn't matter to you if you aren't happy doing it!
Remember, it's not about the money, success or other people's goals for your life. It’s about whether you are happy in the doing of it.
I remember one of my high-paying jobs. I was thrilled and eager to prove myself to my managers. I dove into the job with gusto! I worked hard and made great strides and definitely impressed my bosses. But within a few short months, I was miserable. The job had become very stressful and I had to force myself to show up for work every day. In no time at all, I realized that the money I was earning couldn't justify the sense of emptiness and frustration I tolerated on a daily basis.
It just wasn't worth it!
Perhaps you've had a similar experience? If so, you've quickly realized that money is nothing more than the icing on the cake.
When you understand what you feel passionate about, what you REALLY want, and WHY you want it, you are heading in the right direction.
So, what are you PASSIONATE about? What do you REALLY want? WHY do you want it? Are you heading in the right direction? Leave a comment below and let's talk about it.

Good article.
If the secret to being successful is in knowing what you want,
will you tell people next time,
how to figure out what they want?
Hi Penny,
Thanks for asking about the “how.” That’s actually the topic of this week’s blog post. I'm posting it tomorrow.
